Grass Fed Dexter Beef

Grass Fed Dexter Beef in South Wales

The Pendoylan herd of Dexter cattle.

Hillside is based in Monmouthshire, South Wales. I run Hillside as a low input traditional system, where the sheep and cattle are grass fed, and not pushed on concentrated feeds.
By running as a low input system, we can have a high nature value farm, where the grazing animals are creating and maintaining habitat for wildlife that would otherwise be lost.

Grass Fed Beef

We sell our grass fed beef from our Dexter cattle direct to local customers in South Wales, predominantly around Cardiff, but we do travel further afield too and have customers come to us to collect from all over the country. You can pick whatever you want in your box from Steaks, Topside and Silverside joints, Rib Roasts, through to mince, stewing steak and burgers. Any specific requests can be accommodated, if we have enough notice, to butcher them as you like. If you sign up to our newsletter, you will get an email notification when we have beef available and are going to do a delivery. We normally sell out of all our Dexter Beef by the time we are delivering, so please do order early to avoid disappointment.

Dexter Cattle

So why Dexter cattle? Well we chose the Dexters for a few reasons. They are small and hardy cattle that can outwinter comfortably in the UK, and when we first started we had no buildings. They will grow well on grass and pasture, and do not require supplementary feeding in order to grow. They are also incredibly good eating with well marbled meat giving plenty of flavour and are often described as, "The way Beef used to taste." their small size means they don't cause damage to the ground. We have never so far had to get involved with a calving, in fact I've only ever seen a couple born. Often the first we know of a new calf is when we see them up and drinking off their mother. We are the Pendoylan herd because when we first got them we were farming near Pendoylan in the Vale of Glamorgan. All our herd are now at Ffynnonau Farm in Monmouthshire.
